RFID Case Study: Enhancing Supply Chain Visibility with Dual-Frequency RFID Tag for Perfume Management

The global perfume industry is experiencing rapid growth, driven by increasing consumer demand and expanding international markets. With this expansion, ensuring secure, traceable, and transparent supply chains has become a major priority for brands. Counterfeiting and grey market diversion have become pressing issues that directly impact revenue, brand reputation, and customer trust.

To address these concerns, more perfume companies are adopting RFID technology. RFID-enabled perfume management allows brands to monitor product movement across the supply chain, enhance inventory control, and protect brand integrity. In this case study, we explore how a perfume company tackled cross-region product diversion using our custom-developed dual-frequency RFID tag for perfume management.

The Challenge

A global perfume brand initially implemented NFC tags on every package. This setup allowed consumers to authenticate products using smartphones. However, the brand soon encountered an ongoing issue: product diversion. Perfume intended for the American market were surfacing in European retail channels.

Due to the inherent limitations of NFC technology — such as its short read range and lack of long-range tracking — the brand had no way to collect actionable evidence or identify the point of deviation before delivery. Without reliable data, it was difficult to confront distribution partners or enforce regional pricing policies.

The Solution

After extensive consultation with the perfume brand and its system integrator, the decision was made to convert the NFC tags to dual-frequency RFID tags – a solution that combines UHF (ultra-high frequency) technology for supply chain tracking and NFC for consumer interaction.

The dual tag features both UHF and NFC functionalities:

  • UHF (Ultra High Frequency): Enables long-range and bulk scanning and batch-level tracking across the supply chain — from packaging and warehousing to global logistics and retail arrival. This provides clear data on where and when each unit was handled, supporting traceability and audit readiness.
  • NFC (Near Field Communication): Maintains the original functionality for consumer engagement and point-of-sale authentication. It ensures a seamless brand experience for end users.

To meet the client’s packaging constraints — specifically, minimizing label size and maintaining performance despite proximity to liquids and stacked bottle configurations — our team custom-developed a compact dual-frequency RFID label. In rigorous testing, the label demonstrated high readability in challenging environments, achieving a read rate of 24 bottles within 5 seconds.

We also designed and delivered a dedicated dual-frequency RFID encoding system, allowing the client to manage data writing, verification, and shipment preparation in-house. This streamlined process supports fast deployment and scalable expansion.

Benefits & Results: Brand Protection, Supply Chain Integrity, and Operational Efficiency

Implementing the dual RFID tag brought measurable improvements across multiple facets of the client’s supply chain and brand strategy:

  • Enhanced Supply Chain Visibility: UHF RFID allows the brand to track every product from factory to consumers, enabling real-time tracking.
  • Anti-Diversion Protection: Regional tags are linked with distribution data, making it easy to identify and trace unauthorized sales or transfers.
  • Maintained Consumer Engagement: NFC functionality continues to offer consumers interactive experiences and authenticity verification.
  • Fast Encoding Efficiency: Encoding data into UHF part but can be read via NFC mobile phones.

These benefits contribute to a more secure, transparent, and efficient distribution model in a globalized market.

Conclusion

In an increasingly complex and competitive global market, brand owners must take proactive steps to secure everything is under control. Dual-frequency RFID tags offer a powerful, scalable solution that bridges traceability, consumer interaction, and brand protection.
